history of MSC Filtration

About MSC

MSC Filtration Technologies was founded, by Stanley "Pete" Johnson in 1962, as Manufacturing Service Corporation of Hazardville, Connecticut. The company’s primary products were filtration and separation systems for the machine tool and metal working industries. These systems were engineered and fabricated for both the manufacturers of the machine tools and the companies that utilized them in their manufacturing processes. Manufacturing Service Corporation (MSC) was located on the former grounds of the Hazard Powder Company in the Powder Hollow Industrial Park, located in the Hazardville section of Enfield, CT.

The company grew and soon began designing and manufacturing hydraulic power units, portable and stationary filter carts, and oil water separators. Along with the expanded manufactured product lines, MSC added many other machine tool related products such as pumps, heat exchangers, and chip conveyors.

In 1977, Rick Johnson, Pete's son, joined the company in a sales position that required him to visit many of MSC's customers located in New England and the Northeast. Rick grew with the company holding many different positions, eventually becoming the President, but he never lost his passion to visit with his customers and listening to their needs. MSC eventually changed its name MSC Liquid Filtration Corporation and based on feedback from customers added new technologies to help companies minimize their environmental impact.

Michael Assimus joined MSC Liquid Filtration as an outside sales representative in 1993. Mike’s filtration background, in the pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and coatings industry, added a new dimension to MSC and new major vendors were added that not only helped existing customers but fueled expansion to non-traditional markets for the company. With the passing of Rick Johnson in 1999, Mike was named President of the company. Growth continued and MSC soon found itself fully occupying its original location and several other facilities in the Powder Hollow Industrial Park.

In 2003, MSC moved from its location in Hazardville across town to a 4.5 acre lot in the Enfield Industrial Park. Prior to the move the existing building, on this parcel, was fully renovated and a new address of 198 Freshwater BLVD, Enfield, CT established. To better represent the company’s focus, the name was again changed, in 2005, this time to MSC Filtration Technologies.

MSC celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012 which also saw the town of Enfield approve a building expansion to the Freshwater location. Ground was broken at the end of 2012 and we began to occupy the expanded manufacturing area and warehouse in 2013. MSC Filtration Technologies utilizes advanced 3D modeling software for system designs, current good manufacturing practices, and is currently working on ISO certification.

We have come a long way since the early days by the Scantic River on Dust House Road, but we have never lost our focus on delivering measurable value to our customers. As Pete Johnson always said "We cannot build ourselves, we must build others and by doings so, we build ourselves".
